Penguins! is a clever casual game published by Wild Tangent (download free trial here). The general goal is to help adorable penguins escape from the zoo by placing a series of contraptions in strategic spots on each level which allow the birds to get from their initial part of the maze to the end of the screen. This could involve jumping, flying, lever pulling, trapeze, etc. There really aren't any similar games, except for possibly the original Incredible Machine series from the 1990s (see Wikipedia definition here)
The game is fun to play, creating a new type of gameplay not normally seen in casual games. Each level can involve a fair amount of strategy about where and how to place your gadgets, but the levels are short and easily reset, so it doesn't get too frustrating if you can't finish the level - plus there is no concept of running out of lives, so it's a classic casual game. There is a good sense of humor in the sound effects and the graphics are cute without seeming to be too young. The hint button is a big help in certain circumstances, and you can always pause or speed up the game if needed. Finally, you can use the coins you find on each level to purchase game expansions, MP3 soundtracks, or funny costumes for your penguins, so the game provides a constant feeling of accomplishment as you progress through levels. With 100 levels and 8 different environments, there is a lot of game here.
