Sandlot Games has produced a light action game called Granny in Paradise (download free trial here). The game style is similar to early arcade games such as Lode Runner or Donkey Kong where the player moves around a set of platforms, dodging enemies and obstacles, climbing ladders and running quickly while attempting to gather enough of the required objects to finish the level.
In this case, Granny is trying to find her lost cats and then herd them to the goal on each level, all the while dodging enemies (the evil Tiki Man and his dogs) and running over flowers to gather bonus points. Along the 150 levels, Granny gets to use power ups such as a watering can to create fast growing, climbable vines, and an umbrella which lets her float gently from one level to another to reach a lost cat. The game is entirely non-violent, appearing to aim at a younger or much older audience, and resembles the classic Dig Dug a bit in that the way to stop the enemies is to dig a hole in front of them so they'll fall into it. The tutorial is quite good at introducing the new features and dangers as they appear on each level.
Granny in Paradise is amusing, but many players will tire of it before the 150th level rolls around. The cats follow Granny in a somewhat erratic way, but it adds to the overall feel of the game. The graphics seem a little dated by today's standard, and the audio is fun the first few times, but one quickly tires of the expressions Granny utters every few seconds when a relevant event takes place.
Verdict - retro-fun gaming for the trial period, probably not worth a purchase. Download a free trial here
