Big Fish Games has recently published a casual underwater action game called Ocean Commander (download free trial here). Developed by a Thai company called CyberInteractive, this game is an out and out shooter game, similar to the Japanese arcade games from the 1980's such as Xevious.
The goal is to use your underwater shark-like submarine to shoot your way through 30 levels of enemies, which come in furious waves, followed by the obligatory "Boss" at the end of each scene. The ship controls are on the keyboard (W-S-D-A or Arrow Keys) and the player uses the mouse to aim and shoot the various weapons. Power ups occasionally show up to bolster your defenses, and the player receives money from every destroyed enemy, which can be used to purchase weapon and ship upgrades after each level.
Ocean Commander has a relentless pace, with nice underwater graphics (3D card required) and an upbeat soundtrack, especially as the Bosses show up. The initial levels can seem too tough until you figure out the right tactics and learn how each type of enemy ship reacts, but then it becomes easier. The upgrade shop gives players the ability to try different strategies (more speed, more defense, etc.) until they find one which works. It would be better if the Boss had some type of damage meter to show how damaged it is since the end of each level can seem to go on forever, but it doesn't hurt the game too much.
Verdict - a solid, fast-paced shooter. Download the free demo (here) if you like that type of game.

Don't believe that winning is really everything. It's more important to stand for something. If you don't stand for something, what do you win?
